How To Care For Leather Items

Caring for your leather products will ensure that they remain supple and will increase their durability.

You do not need expensive leather care products to look after your leather items. Soap and water, a soft rag, some talcum powder (or even ground black board chalk), a polishing agent and some tissue paper will do the trick.

General Cleaning:

To clean dirty spots on the leather, use a damp rag dipped in some warm soapy water to gently clean off the marks. Unfortunately ink stains are permanent and cannot be cleaned off of leather.

Removing Harsh Stains:

Stains like blood, food and mildew can be cleaned up quickly with a damp cloth and soap water. If you spill oil or grease, it is recommended that you sprinkle ordinary talcum powder or ground blackboard chalk over the area and leave it for 24-hours. Do not rub the powder into the leather. After 24-hours simply brush off the powder and the stain should be lifted.

Polishing:

Some polishing agents can contain colourants that stain other materials that come into contact with the leather, or the agents can clog the leather’s pores, which will lead to the leather drying out.

Always test the leather polishing product on a small unseen area of your leather product to test its quality.

Simply clean your product with a damp, soft cloth and then apply the polish with a soft dry rag and buff it until it shines.

Storing:

Store your leather item without covering it in a plastic bag or container, as this will suffocate the leather and cause mildew.

Instead, use a breathable fabric pillow case or a dust cover for long-term storage of your leather items.

Storage on a shelf in a dark, cool closet – away from moist – will keep your leather in its optimal condition. Avoid direct sunlight or heat, as this will damage and dry out the leather.

Leather handbags can be stuffed with tissue paper in order to maintain its shape.
